In this blog post we’ll get to know Ali – a software developer at Make Helsinki and a heavy Netflix user. Ali works with front end and backend development and also with different mobile development projects.

How did your career start at Make Helsinki?

I joined Make Helsinki in 2012 when I was finishing my internship and started looking at other companies where I could work after my graduation. I was interviewed by two companies and one of them was Monkey Experience, now known as Make Helsinki. I think both of the interviews went well but I really hoped that I’d get the call from Make first, because I had decided that I am going to say yes to which one ever calls me first. And then I received the first call from Make.

Today, I work with backend and front end development. I have worked in different projects and customers ranging from Orion Pharma’s My Wellbeing app to the Kaffecentralen webshop we developed and are still maintaining. I graduated from school with basic java programming language knowledge and now I already have aquired quite a wide range of skills.

What are you working with right now?

I’m working with a project for Orion Pharma and I am using iOS, Android and HTML5. Besides that I’m also doing minor updates for the Orion Phama My Wellbeing app and soon about to start working with the Tasting Book iOS app updates.

We are mainly working with clients from the healthcare industry, so when we are doing something, we know that it really matters for the end user and for our client. We basically help our clients to provide better service and health for their customers and that’s why I take my work quite seriously.

What have been the best moments in your work?

When I joined, we had just started working on a very important customer case and almost half of the workload was on my shoulders from day one. I knew that the project was very important for our customer as well so I wanted to do my work perfectly. I liked having responsibility from the start and it gave me more boost than stress. It was almost Christmas time and I was so excited about the project that I used my free time and also my Christmas holidays for work. Of course it wasn’t required from me but I just wanted to spend my own time to make it good.

After the job was done, we had a meeting and my boss gave me a small envelope and thanked me. For me, it was a sign that I had proved my skills. That time I understood that people trust that I can do things. It was a great moment.

And generally speaking, it’s great to be surrounded by people who are good at their job. I’ve benefited a lot from everyone in the company and they have been great help to me. One day I’d like to be a specialist in a certain area and the person people come and ask guidance from.

How do you like to spend your free time?

I like building my own applications that I could use in my daily life. I like to invest my time in mobile development because I see the future in it. We also watch lot of movies and TV series with my girlfriend from Netflix. I can watch Netflix for 5 hours non-stop. And what many people may not know, I used to work as a part-time cook. I like to try new recipies and cook at home.
